NE Border Corridor: North American Context. This map shows the location of the study area on the North American continent. It occupies the northeast corner of the US and the South East reaches of Canada that border each other. Study Area States and Provinces. The ten states and provinces that comprise the study area are outlined on this map. These include Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, & New York on the U.S. side. It also includes Newfoundland, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Ontario on the Canadian side. The vast majority of economic activity is on the Canadian side of the border. Economic Distress Map. Color is used to indicate the extent of economic distress in the CanAm region on this map. The most distressed areas are those in the Northern reaches of the states on the U.S. side, where east-west access is virtually non-existent Strategic Highway Network. This map shows the major federal, state, and provincial highways in the study area. The strong north-south orientation of the existing highway network is obvious. On the US side, there are no four-lane interstates north of I-90. North of Route 2, which serves central Vermont, New Hampshire, and southern Maine, it is virtually impossible to travel east-west on contiguous paved surfaces. CanAm Annual Truck Border Crossings. The highest-volume truck border crossings for trucks in the study area are illustrated on this map. The busiest crossings are in the Buffalo area -- a major route to Toronto -- and in Vermont at I-87 and I-89 on the way to Montreal. CanAm Airports. This map shows the major passenger and cargo airports in the CanAm region. These include Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, St. John’s, Charlottetown, Halifax, St. John, Bangor, Burlington, and Manchester. CanAm Ports. The major ports in the CanAm region are shown on this map. Most of these are on the Canadian side including Toronto, Montréal, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Belledune, Charlottestown, Halifax, St. John’s, Come-by-Chance, and St. John, NB. On the US side are Searsport, Portland, and Portsmouth. | |||||||
